The Samsung Lions avenged an upset loss the day before with a dramatic ninth-inning comeback win.
Samsung completed a dramatic 7-6 come-from-behind victory over KIA in the ninth game of the season at Pohang Baseball Stadium on Sunday, thanks to Ryu Ji-hyuk’s tying RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning and Kang Min-ho’s walk-off single.
Trailing 4-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, Ryu Ji-hyuk’s game-tying single with one out and Kang Min-ho’s RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth against KIA closer Jung Hae-young gave Samsung its first win after losing four straight games in Pohang this season.
The first inning belonged to Kia, who were fresh off a come-from-behind win the day before.
In the top of the first inning, Choi Won-jun and Kim Do-young retired Samsung starter Choi Chae-heung on consecutive strikes. However, No. 3 Na Sung-beom pulled a 140-kilometer fastball low on the body and sent it over the right field fence. It was his eighth solo home run of the season with a distance of 125 meters.
However, the Samsung batting lineup, which led the team in batting average in the second half, was not easy.
Trailing 0-1 in the bottom of the third inning, they took advantage of ‘big pitcher’ Yang Hyun-jong to score three runs.
Two innings later, four consecutive hits came. Ryu Ji-hyeok tied the game with a double down the right field line, followed by Koo Ja-rook’s two-run double with runners on second and third.
After being held to three hits and one run by Samsung starter Choi Chae-heung through five innings, the Kia bats exploded in the top of the sixth, trailing 1-3.
The bats came alive again with a big four-run inning, capitalizing on four hits and three walks.
The inning started with Park Chan-ho drawing a 10-pitch, full-count walk. Choi Won-jun singled and Kim Do-young walked to load the bases. Choi Chae-heung was relieved on the mound.
Samsung’s bullpen gets an early start. It was the moment KIA had been waiting for.
Against left-hander Lee Seung-hyun, Na Sung-beom’s sacrifice fly and Choi Hyung-woo’s RBI single tied the game at 3-3. With runners on first and third, Kim Sun-bin took advantage of the new pitcher, right-hander Lee Seung-hyun’s first pitch, and doubled down the right field line. Lee Woo-sung drew an intentional walk to load the bases and Kim Tae-gun singled to right field to make it 5-3.
Na Sung-beom, who was hot with four hits and three RBIs the day before, continued his hot streak with two hits, including a leadoff home run and a two-run sacrifice fly.
Kia’s “Big Pitcher” Yang Hyun-jong threw 94 pitches in the first five innings, allowing seven hits, one walk, five strikeouts, and three earned runs to earn his sixth win of the season. However, the bullpen failed to protect a two-run lead in the ninth inning, leaving him one win shy of reaching 163 career wins 스포츠토토.
Yang became the seventh player in history to record 100 innings in 10 consecutive seasons and the second player in history to reach 1,900 career strikeouts, joining Song Jin-woo.
For the second straight day, Samsung took advantage of their opponent’s starting pitching to take the lead, and for the second straight day, their bullpen was on fire.
But there was no giving up. Trailing 3-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning, three left-handed batters reached on walks and consecutive singles to load the bases against “lefty” Lee Jun-young. However, Pirela retired the side on a grounder to short, but pinch-hitter Kang Min-ho’s short outfield hit was followed by a bold home dash by third baseman Kim Hyun-joon to cut the deficit to one.
In the bottom of the ninth, the team brought in Oh Seung-hwan to close out the game, but two infield errors gave up another run.
But it wasn’t over until it was over. Trailing 4-6 in the bottom of the ninth, Samsung had the bases loaded after a double by pinch-hitter Kim Dong-jin, a single by Kim Ho-jae, and a walk by Kim Ji-chan.
Kim Hyun-jun’s RBI single was blocked by a sliding catch by Kia first baseman Kim Kyu-sung. However, Ryu Ji-hyuk kept the spark alive with a dramatic tying RBI single and then Kang Min-ho put the finishing touches on the thrilling comeback drama with a two-out single.
