South Korea finishes eighth at the Universiade.

The South Korean men’s basketball team, led by head coach Jung Jae-hoon, lost 66-99 in the seventh-place game against Lithuania at the 31st Summer Universiade in Chengdu, China, on Saturday.

South Korea, which lost to Lithuania in its final game, finished the tournament in eighth place. The height difference was evident in the rebounding battle, where they were outrebounded 16-35.

Shin Min-seok poured in 19 points, including five three-pointers, to lead the offense, but Korea fell apart in the second half. Park Mubin (10 points) and Lee Jung-hyun (9 points, 4 steals) also played well, but couldn’t prevent their team from losing.

South Korea went toe-to-toe with Lithuania in the first quarter. They struggled on offense, going scoreless for the first two and a half minutes of the game, but Lee Jung-hyun opened the scoring with a three-pointer following a free throw. Shin Min-seok and Lee Geun-hwi then provided perimeter support for Korea. Park Mubin scored to give Korea a narrow lead, ending the first quarter at 22-20.

Entering the second quarter, South Korea continued to struggle with the turnover advantage. After a series of turnovers by Lithuania, Korea fought back with Park’s effort, an end-to-end play by Kim Kyung-won and a three-pointer by Shin Min-seok. The Koreans stayed close with Lithuania and ended the half with a 43-47 lead.

The tightly contested game took a major turn in the third quarter.

After a turnover to start the third quarter, South Korea got off to a bad start with back-to-back baskets from Marius Valinskas. Down by double digits, South Korea rallied with three straight three-pointers from Shin Min-seok.

However, after cutting the deficit back to four points, the Koreans couldn’t find any easy baskets and fell behind. Lithuania took advantage of the Korean lull and went on a 15-2 scoring run. Korea responded with a tough three-pointer from Lee Jung-hyun, but a series of turnovers on the ensuing possession wore them down. The third quarter ended with Korea trailing 57-74.

The flowing Lithuanian offense continued in the fourth quarter, and the gap widened to more than 20 points. Korea’s scoring drought from inside and outside continued, but a late three-pointer from Yoon Won-sang was not enough to turn the game around. 스포츠토토
