Jae Woong Kim suffered an upset loss against a mixed martial arts world-class fighter.
In the third round of “ONE Fight Night 13” at Lumpini Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, on May 5, former ONE Championship featherweight champion Kim Jae-woong was knocked out with four seconds left in the fight by former bantamweight champion John Lineker with a left hook followed by ground strikes.
“Lineker pulled off a dramatic upset thanks to his signature stone fists,” the official ONE Championship website said 메이저놀이터.
Lineker had an impressive career in the UFC from 2012-2019, including a flyweight title fight semifinal and a top-four finish in the bantamweight division. After joining ONE Championship, he remained atop the bantamweight division until March 2022 with four straight wins in his debut.
The official website of ONE Championship commented, “In rounds 1-2, Kim Jae-woong was hit hard. In the third round, he was confident in his striking-based offense,” but also analyzed that “he was prepared to drag the former bantamweight champion down to the depths of the ground, but he was unable to do any real damage.”
Kim came out with a takedown as a surprise. While Lineker didn’t dismiss his opponent’s grappling ahead of the event, saying he had “good wrestling defense,” he was clearly caught off guard.
However, as the ONE Championship website pointed out, Kim didn’t have the choke or joint control to threaten Lineker, nor did he have the stamina to stay on the ground. This is one of the reasons for the late upset.
It’s also disappointing that their matchup was originally scheduled for bantamweight, but Lineker was about 4.1 percent over the cut weight.
For accepting the fight against an opponent who failed to make weight, ONE Championship will pay him 25% of Lineker’s fight fee.
