Woo Sang-hyuk, the “Smile Jumper,” could make Korean track and field history once again.
Woo will compete in the men’s high jump at the 2023 World Athletics Diamond League Final on Sunday at 3:08 a.m. ET at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, USA. The top six athletes in the field, ranked by ranking points earned across the 13 Diamond League events, will advance to the final. Woo Sang-hyuk earned 20 points and qualified for the final in fourth place. This is the first time a Korean athlete has reached the Diamond League Finals.
Woo’s chances of making it to the final were boosted by the fact that Mutaz Essa Barshim (Qatar), considered the “strongest man alive,” and this year’s World Athletics Championships winner Jean-Marco Tambéry decided not to compete after qualifying for the final.
Barshim is a three-time Diamond League Final champion (2014-2015-2017), while Tamberi is a powerhouse who won back-to-back titles in 2021 and last year. Barshim qualified for the Final as the number one player in the Diamond League standings (29 points) and Tambéry as the number five player (15 points), but both players chose not to compete for personal reasons. 토토사이트
As a result, it will be a two-way battle for the title between Woo and Jubon Harrison (USA). Harrison was the runner-up at this year’s World Championships and has won three individual Diamond League events this year. Woo finished second in all three of Harrison’s events. However, the two players are only a paper-thin margin apart, and their rankings could change depending on their performance on the day.
Woo will become the first South Korean to win a medal at the Diamond League Finals with a podium finish at this event.
